My view and process as an artist are deeply informed by nearly 30 years as a Zen student and I engage in creative process as a form of meditation practice. Art making is the most reliable way I know to directly experience the sacred, interconnected ground of being and appreciate the potential held within the open space of not knowing. My primary medium is encaustic painting (which uses a combination of beeswax, tree resin and pigment) but I am also drawn to spontaneous interplay of flowing inks and dripping paints. While my work is very much inspired by rocks and trees, the feel of wind, the subtle qualities of light in the sky and the movement of water; I strive to accurately describe the emotional experience of contact with natural elements rather than objectively depict what I see.
