Sparks and Shambles is a series of collages that aim to create moments of delight, introspection, and contemplation from magazine scraps. I’ve always been attracted to actions that take boring everyday objects and use them for something joyful. The way skateboarders turn every curb into a toy and vandals turn every bathroom wall into a canvas always makes me smile. I decided to make artwork out of magazines because I feel that they’re an example of identity through consumption at its most shameless. Each magazine seems to affirm an aspect of a reader's identity while hinting that they need to buy something else to truly fit in. With these collages, I hope to turn these magazine’s vibrant visuals into works that offer moments of joy and intrigue.
