Photography starts as light filtering through my mind's eye. I can replicate the natural world, or I can step into what the landscape/nature painter, Kathryn Mapes Turner, calls the "metaphorical fog", that is, a vision that goes beyond the edges of the literal to transcend the physical limitations of our senses.
Photographing the 360-degree natural surround, I've become less interested in documenting nature per se, or the human estimate of color and form. I've begun to sense the spirits, the sparks of life, the energy of light and shape that create both a familiar and evocative experience for the viewer---the pulsing depth of life, the seen and the unseen, the literal and the metaphorical.
