OPEN STUDIOS TOUR

The Open Studios Tour is held the first three weekends of October. This year, the dates are Oct. 2-3, 9-10, and 16-17. Tour artists may participate on any or all weekends. The 2021 Preview Exhibit will return to the Museum of Boulder. This exhibit will showcase one piece of each Tour Artist’s best work and will open the week prior to the beginning of the Tour. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 24th, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Up to 140 artists applying to this call for entry who receive the highest scores from our jurors, will be invited to participate in the Tour. If a Tour participation invitation is extended to you, accepting it will not be mandatory.

Tour Artists must participate in the Tour at a location within the Open Studios map (see map provided). For Boulder County Tour-invited artists whose studios are located outside the Open Studios Tour map, you may establish a temporary Tour location at a colleague’s studio or another temporary studio location. Open Studios will provide reasonable assistance in helping you find a temporary Tour location.

In addition to the Social Media and Tax Training workshop provided to Open Studios Members, two Tour preparation workshops will be provided for artists. These will assist Tour artists in developing their own Tour promotion strategies and teach basic in-person sales techniques.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the time frame for membership?

In 2021, Artist Membership will run from July 1 through June, 2022 and all representation and benefits as described above will apply continuously throughout the year.

What tools are available to help me prepare for Open Studios Membership?

Open Studios will provide workshops on a range of topics to help participating artists promote themselves using virtual resources. Topics will include general information and specific training in sales techniques, social media and more.

Who produces the Open Studios Tour?

Open Studios, Inc, a Boulder County visual arts nonprofit, produces the annual Open Studios Tour. Our mission is to advance and enrich the visual arts and promote the role of artists in the Boulder community. The Open Studios Tour is our flagship event and is promoted through our other five programs.

Who is eligible to apply for Open Studios membership?

The 2021, our program is now open to all artists living and or working in Boulder County.

What if I collaborate with another artist? Can we apply together on one application?

Artists may apply together on one application ONLY if all of the work submitted is collaborative.

How much work can I include on my Artist Page?

Your Artist Page will automatically include the six images you submitted via Cafe. You may submit an additional six images for your online gallery.  Artists can show other media and styles, provided the quality of work is equivalent to the work submitted for jurying. We recommend presenting works in no more than two mediums on your application to demonstrate consistency and style for our jurors.

Can I show other artists’ work on my Artist Page? What if my studio is in a building with other studios?

Artists may not show other artists' work on their Open Studios Page. We ask artists working in cluster or group studios to encourage their fellow artists to officially participate in the Open Studios Tour.

What's involved in participating in the Online Shop and is it required?

Selling your work in our Online Shops & Galleries is optional. We may have various promotions or themes in the Shops over the course of the year and you will get all the details about how to participate. In our Gift Gallery, you can submit up to 15 items with photos, descriptions and pricing. While we will manage all sales - collecting tax and shipping costs up front - you will be responsible for the actual shipping fulfillment and we will reimburse you for a percentage of sales and shipping charges.

May I show and sell reproductions of my work?

A reproduction is defined as a copy of your original art. Reproductions for sale may be included in your Open Studios Shop Gallery, as well as on the Tour.

  • They should be clearly labeled as reproductions.

  • An explanation of the reproduction process should be included. This explanation should serve to educate the public about the distinction between original art and reproductions (e.g. “These are giclée prints of my oil paintings, printed using archival inks and paper on an inkjet printer.")

  • Photography and digital art are considered original art, not reproductions.

What is included in a Virtual Video Tour of my studio and is it required?

A video is not required but if you would like to do one, it can highlight any aspect of your studio that you choose. You can show your process, your studio set‐up, sample work, art in process, talk about your inspirations - it's up to you. Think of your video as a TV commercial for you!
