This year has been devoted to BIG, BLACK AND BEAUTIFUL. I have been concentrating on original, ever larger variations of moon jars. I also discovered a wonderful deep black clay that I’ve been using to make vessels of all shapes. And last fall I was able to bring home some wonderful Southern Ice porcelain from a trip to New Zealand. This porcelain, inaccessible in the US, is world famous for its marvelous transparency and I’ve been using it to make some wonderful, delicate small bowls and cups.
I’ve been formulating unique crawl glazes that swell, shrink and peel away from the clay surface to form totally unpredictable skips, bulges and protrusions. These pieces are finished in partnership with the kiln and the results are always a total surprise. I’ve also been experimenting with 24 carat gold detail, including the kintsuki process. And I’ve continued to develop my shino, oribe and deep blue glazes.
