Initial inspiration: a place, an experience, a color, an emotion, from a photograph, sometimes what I see in front of me, sometimes just what’s in my head right then, something internal.
I start with gesture, then color, then perhaps drawing. Maybe in a different order. Then, layers, repeating brushwork, drawing, color changes, sometimes adding collage paper. Many of the papers I have were my mother's, a hand bookbinder; many I have made myself.
The painting/layering process may send me far from where I began. So at some point, I ask myself, what is the point of this painting? What now?
Then, more layers -- or not -- until the image resonates with my intention, as it has evolved.
