Danelle Sabathier
I am a contemporary abstract painter based in Boulder, Colorado. My work uses color to express the psychological states before, during, and after significant change, emotional upheaval, or life-altering experiences.
Working primarily with saturated reds and deep blues, I build paintings through layers of acrylic glaze, then scrape, abrade, obscure, and selectively remove areas of paint. Forms are constructed and partially undone, allowing earlier layers to emerge, disappear, and return in altered form.
This process reflects my interest in how significant experiences change us. What is buried does not necessarily disappear. It can compress, fragment, resurface, or leave a trace. The paintings move through states of pressure, rupture, emergence, dissipation, and endurance.
Rather than resolving tension, the work holds it. Even after disruption, something remains.
