Karen Kirkpatrick
After receiving a BFA from University of Colorado, Denver in 2002, Karen turned toward conceptual photographic work for her creative outlet. Shooting primarily black & white film for many years, she began using a digital camera in 2009. The addition of digital manipulation caused her to discover that color could also add depth and emotion to her very personal work that previously she had captured best with monochromatic scenes.
Digital manipulation allows Karen control over expression of mood and emotion. Often using the landscape and nature, she builds images that hold a story, a feeling, or a suggestion of human connection to parts of nature that we often take for granted. She infuses her work with the unseen – sometimes touching on the psychological or emotional and sometimes the ethereal. There is a human presence in each of the images, which is often implied rather than obvious.
