Medium: Painting, Drawing

Painting is one of the great joys of my life. I’ve been painting for over 50 years, and teaching for over 30 years. Painting gives me a way to explore what it means to be alive.

I was blessed to have many great teachers. As an undergrad one of my teachers was Don Weygandt, a gem. He was also a student and friend of Diebenkorn. Don passed it on! In grad school — I received an MFA from Yale in ‘91— I had John Walker, William Bailey, Andrew Forge — incredible painters and teachers. I try to pass on what they gave to my students.

My own painting is done from observation, flowers, landscapes, a studio interior. I explore ways of translating my experience into paint, and the relationships between perception, mark, and awareness. I’m deeply interested in presence. Some of my painting is naturalistic, rendered slowly or fast and gestural — and sometimes the painting ends up looking more abstract. I believe painting is essential to being human. I welcome visitors and curious folks to drop by.
