As an artist I seek to make space for fragments of a collective subconscious to surface, giving the viewer access to something larger than self. My highest aim is to achieve Ma, the Japanese aesthetic concept in which the spectator glimpses a space outside of space and time. I am accompanied by many voices—Sappho, Cixous, Turner, Stravinsky, O’Keeffe, and Eno. Most vividly, I hear Robert Wilson reminding me that everything matters, while John Cage whispers that nothing does. Between these tensions, each first brushstroke becomes a leap into transformation.
