I was taught to see color in the manner that traces back to Monet. I am very influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement as well as Fritz Scholder, Georgia O’Keeffe and, specifically, Joan Mitchell. I work primarily with oil, as I love color mixing and for this there is nothing better than oil paint. Every color that I use has been mixed in the moment and never directly from the tube, as I love to enjoy the complexity of color and color relationships. It’s fun for me to see how adjacent color influences our perception of the color. The paper pastel pieces are movements my hands have had for a long time, and they wished to be expressed in these colorful geometric shapes. They are playful and reminiscent of Miró and Calder.
