Annie Thayer
My work is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world, expressed through loose, intuitive watercolor paintings that often verge on abstraction. I’m drawn to landscapes not as fixed places, but as shifting expressions of light, movement, and emotion. Rather than recreating a scene, I aim to capture its essence—a flash of sunlight on water or the quiet tension before a storm. Watercolor’s fluidity and unpredictability suit this approach. I welcome how pigment moves, creating edges, blooms, and transparencies that echo natural forces. I work on location and in the studio, often starting with sketchbook studies made while traveling or walking in the woods near home. Color is central to how I interpret the world. I use it expressively, letting mood and memory shape each painting—a conversation between what I see and what I feel, and an invitation to pause and connect with the beauty of impermanence.
