Talking or writing about myself as an artist somehow does not quite fit with my sense of myself as a mother, grandmother, RN, pottery instructor, psychotherapist, and spiritual teacher.

And yet, I have made pots and painted, on and off, for many, many years. Betty Woodman was my teacher in the ’70s, and I studied with Paul Soldner, Ruth Duckworth, and other wonderful pottery teachers. Now Rey Ford is a painting teacher that I study with.

In a certain way, being an artist has been my secret—my heart’s love, and my hearts struggle to express something of my nature through art. I haven’t really spoken about this out loud before. At times I have spoken instead to the the clay and the canvas, as I work.

It is more about my soul’s journey: discovery, frustration, delight, rage, joy—never quite settling, always continuing. It has been a tender and delightful journey.

And so, to have my work seen and used—to have someone drink from one of my mugs, eat from one of my bowls, love my vessels, or spend time with one of my paintings—feels intimate and precious.
