El Cristo Negro
Digital, 48" x 36"
Being part El Salvadoran I would occasionally see statues of "The Black Christ", which is celebrated all across Central America and now growing in Los Angeles. The history is murky, but "El Cristo Negro" is a symbol of anti slavery, while simultaneously used as a means of converting the indegouness population to Christianity. Natives of Central America adapted this version of Christ because they saw themselves, color wise, in him compared to the more traditional version of Jesus.
