Month of Photography Denver (MOP) is a biennial festival celebrating the art of photography through various events and activities across the region. Founded in 2004 by Denver-based artist, Mark Sink, the festival features work from hundreds of local, national and international artists on display in numerous venues during the month of March. Click on the MOP logo for more information.

This year, Open Studios is excited to be a part of this great event. We will be hosting two special events: A Photography Shootout and a special Online MOP Gallery.

Deadline Extended to April 5!

50% of registration fees will be donated

to our Boulder Strong Fundraiser.

KICKOFF Saturday, March 20, 9 am - 12 pm at Walden Ponds, Boulder

Qualified Images must be shot at Walden Ponds (or Sawhill Ponds) at any time between

March 20 and April 5.

All photographers, using any equipment, are welcome to register for this first-ever event, brought to you with support from Mike's Camera. Similar to a plein air paintout, you are welcome to spend as much or as little time as you like shooting in this beautiful, wetlands wildlife habitat. The area features 2.9 miles of lightly trafficked trails which meander around many small ponds. Just pick your spot(s) and shoot whatever catches your fancy. March is the best time to catch migrating ducks.

After your time at Walden Ponds, you can return to your studio and pick your best three images for submission into the Shootout Contest. Please submit by 5pm on Monday, April 5. There will be separate categories for "straight shots" and "digitally manipulated." All submitted images will be displayed on a special online gallery page and the best three will be acknowledged and awarded prizes from Mike's Camera. The three winning images will also be printed and exhibited at the Boulder store.

If you want to shoot on Saturday KickOff Day (March 20) or on Saturday April 3, check in with us at the covered shelter area at Cottonwood Marsh Trailhead between 9 am and noon. Take Walden Ponds Rd off North 75th St. to the very end (pass the Wally Toevs Trailhead.) We will have coffee, hot chocolate and snacks available. There are 25 parking spaces there and a restroom. If that lot is full, you can also park at Wally Toevs and walk in on the trail. Click on the map to the right to get the lay of the land.

If you cannot make it on Saturday, no problem! Just head to Walden Ponds at any time between March 20 and April 5. Just be sure to get us your submissions by 5pm on April 5.

Submission Instructions: Deadline April 5, 5pm. Format one to three images as jpegs with a file size of about 1 mb. Email to Be sure to include your name, a title for each photo, your phone number and whether images have been digitally enhanced or not. Save your high rez files for print in case you are a winner.
