Making a Journal or Sketchbook with artist Jill Powers

For artists, writers, poets. Learn to create your own thick blank books for sketches, journaling, or writing. We will learn to make hardcover books using an Ethiopian binding that allows the book to lay open perfectly flat at any page, making it easy to write in. Create cover designs using handmade papers, recycled items, book cloth, and collage. Infuse your book with beautiful papers in-between sections, and make decorative closures, pockets, and other additions. Covers can be made of covered bookboard, wood, metal, or found objects!

Drawing: Art Foundations for Teens and Adults with Open Studios Artist Elizabeth Jenny
Want to learn to draw or get back into drawing? This course will cover the basics of drawing and will support the development of good observational skills as well as technique. Real objects will be studied and drawn rather than working from photos or copies. Lighting and composition will be considered as well as shape, tone and line. Students will work on different drawing papers and in a variety of media including charcoal, pastel, conte crayon and pencil. Master artist drawings will be reviewed but not copied. A variety of subject matter may be used and students are welcome to bring their own objects to draw.

Altered Books with artist Jill Powers

Convert a vintage book into a piece of art- a creative journey. This is an opportunity work with concepts, images, text, and your imagination. We will look at an inspiring collection of altered books for ideas and technical aspects. Many methods of altering will be incorporated: niches, windows, collage, pockets, envelopes, interactive additions and more. It starts with any type of hardcover book. Once you've chosen your book, you "alter" it, using acrylics, adhesives, image transfers, imbedded objects, and more. Turn it into a way to honor someone’s memory, make an object for an altar, or explore your ideas or favorite subjects visually. You will learn many book making techniques along the way!

Making Art: A Mystical Manifestation with Sue Hammond West
